Your family just booked a summer beach vacation – yay! BUT, you are secretly freaking out. Swimsuits, lots of skin, things that are jigglier than usual. Yikes. For many moms, our bodies look different after having kids. Hello, stretch marks and saggy bits. The great news is that these things are mostly in our head. But we still want to feel confident when we strip off that cover up. How can we get there? Today let’s talk about how to get fit as a busy mom (in 4 easy steps!)
Before we focus on fitness, let’s talk self-compassion.
First and foremost, we have gotta love our bodies just the way they are.
Come on, they grew and produced tiny human creatures.
If that isn’t incredibly gorgeous, what is? Once we’ve established we are beautiful and worthy just as we are, then it’s time to move on to self-care via fitness.
MK here… Fitness should be a lifelong process. Not a quick fix.
It’s easy to focus on summer because more skin is exposed, but in truth, we should set our sights to get fit for the rest of our lives. Freezing temps and beyond! Now that my PSA is out of the way, let’s talk about how to get fit as a busy mom.
Get fit today! Go for a morning walk. Start using the stairs. Bike your way to work. Get your bootie to the gym. Dance around the house for 20 minutes. Whatever you do, stop making excuses. We’re all tired. We all have things we would rather be doing. We are moms after all. But if we start now, our hearts, bodies, and happy outlooks will thank us. A win-win!
Here are some great apps to download to help you get fit as a busy mom:
Keeping yourself accountable for exercising, drinking water, and what you’re putting into your body helps you see where you need to improve. Not drinking enough water? Your log will let you know. Burnt 500 calories today? Add that into your app. You can also add friends and work with accountability buddies to keep you motivated in your weight loss journey.
Here’s an app for mamas who are trying to get fit but need some sort of incentive. HealthyWage users place a monetary bet on their weight loss and if they win, they get all their money back and then some. You are guaranteed to win at least your money back if you manage to successfully lose the weight that you set for yourself. They also assign you an accountability group.
Are you a visual person? Are fitspiring photos your thing? Maybe there is a killer dress you want to look amazing in for a summer wedding.
Know why you want to get fit.
And never knock the value of having a strong, healthy body that feels good for life!
When it comes to maintaining motivation, how will you push through the slumps?
Here are some ways you can get pumped to work out even when you really don’t feel like it:
The key is to keep going even when you don’t want to.
Beware the diet fads.
Eating foods that offer a major nutritional punch, combined with consistent exercise, is wonderfully effective.
Colorful fruits and veggies, lean proteins, nuts and avocados, and whole grains are your friends.
Water is always your best bet.
Though it is fashionable to drink protein shakes and sports drinks, water hydrates your body better than anything UNLESS you are performing vigorous activity for longer than an hour. Then it is important to rehydrate with an electrolyte beverage. But for most people, water is perfect. If you’re an ultramarathoner, triathlon, Iron Man person, you know what works for you, but this advice is for the mamas who exercise one hour or less three to six days per week.
Allowing yourself a treat here and there is okay, too but the key is to move toward higher nutritional quality and less of the stuff that leaves your body feeling listless.
Stay away from:
Pay attention to your hunger cues.
Try eating smaller meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism going. Eat to the point of satisfaction without overstuffing your belly.
If you haven’t had a physical in the past year, now would be a great time.
In order to get fit, you want to make sure your body is working properly from the get-go.
Check those blood levels. Make sure that your heart is strong.
Then embark on the journey to keep your body happy and healthy.

You don’t need an expensive gym membership to get fit.
Using the great outdoors or your own home is just as effective. The key is to find a location that is convenient, accessible, and that you WANT to use.
If you have all the gym equipment in the world at home, but you hate being isolated with no social interaction, you will struggle.
Likewise, if you’re on the go all day and you crave having more time with your family, you’ll be far more likely to skip another outing at the gym.
Get creative and selfish:
One tip if you are a gym goer is to look for a recreation or community center in your area. Often, you can pay as you go for this type of center.
For example, in Northern Virginia, the recreation centers cost about $6 – 7 per visit – that’s super affordable and you can easily supplement it with other exercises at home or outdoors.
Oftentimes, the community center will have FREE gym equipment that you can use, with the only requirement being that you are a resident of the county. The gyms are clean, very basic, and no-frills but they do offer some free classes such as Zumba.

Always make sure that you are taking advantage of the low-cost things in your area!
Another low-budget way to get in shape is to find hiking trails or walking trails in your area. If that’s too much, you could even walk up and down the street with a steep hill for about 30 minutes a week. This can be done with a stroller or during your “me” time.
Sworkit is an app that busy moms can easily use at home. They have many workout choices. You can also do yoga and pilates through this app, too.

A super fast workout app that you can do in less than 10 minutes. If you’re new to working out or don’t have a lot of time, this is a great app to help you get fit as a busy mom.

Growing up, I remember watching my relatives doing workouts with those old exercise videos and DVDs on TV. Nowadays, you can check out the exercise options on your Netflix or Amazon Prime accounts or hit up YouTube for a fast and free workout. There are so many options depending on what you are interested in – 5-minute yoga flows, Zumba workouts, cardio, dance, etc.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, there are other options that you can consider as a starting point, such as the Pop Sugar 2-Week Plan. This free plan is super easy to follow and won’t leave you bored either!
Whatever you do, always make sure that you set yourself up for success – whatever that looks like to you.
If you can spend 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening, you will notice a difference!
It’s all about feeling super confident in the summertime and beyond! Once you get some key components in place, you will be well on your way to looking and feeling great!
