Travel Hacking: 6 Expensive Mistakes When Booking Hotels That You’re Making

July 25, 2019

When it comes to getting ready to travel, having the perfect hotel room is key.  You want enough space for your family but do not want to spend all of your savings on the room.  There are a few common mistakes that people tend to make when they’re booking their hotel room. Today, we’ll go over how you can plan for your family trips by travel hacking hotels. With travel hacking, you’ll learn how to travel without making these expensive mistakes when booking hotels.

Expensive Mistake #1: Not signing up for a hotel rewards program when booking

Before you book that hotel room, make sure that you double-check that you’re signed up for that hotel’s rewards program!

Even if you don’t have a credit card, you can still snag some great perks this way for your travels.

For example, at Kimpton Hotels you can get an amazing $30 credit to spend on spa treatments – just for signing up!  Talk about a steal.

Expensive Mistake #2: Not checking multiple websites when booking hotels

Are you really certain that you’re getting the best deal?

Always double-check multiple websites before you book your room to make sure that you have the lowest rate possible.

Once you find it, call the hotel and ask if they will honor the lowest rate. If they do honor the rate, always book through the hotel to snag those valuable rewards points.

When you book through a third party website or service, hotels typically don’t honor your rewards account program and you will miss out on those points! Don’t make these mistakes when booking hotels for your trip!

Expensive Mistake #3: Not booking your hotel with a credit card

Always, always, always use a credit card when booking your hotel room!

Tons of credit cards nowadays offer some sort of travel protection as a card benefit – you could get your money back this way if you suddenly have to cancel your trip due to work or illness.

In order to get this feature with your booking, you’ll need to be certain to use the rewards credit card with this program when booking your room.

Additionally, lots of credit card companies are now offering free stays in cash-back bonuses!

All in all, make sure that you know your credit card bonuses and features before you book so that you can figure out which option is best for you.

Expensive Mistake #4: Not checking the hotel cancellation policy

Whatever you do, always make sure that you check the hotel cancellation policy before you book.

If you suddenly need to cancel, you want to make sure that you’ll get your money back and some hotels don’t offer refunds if you book at a certain rate!

A lot of people make the mistake of not reading the fine print – if you scan it beforehand and don’t understand something, you can reach out before you book to get the answers that you need!

Expensive Mistake #5: Not checking the occupancy of the hotel room

If you’re traveling, especially with a large family, always make sure that you confirm the maximum occupancy of the room, or how many people are allowed to stay in a single room.  In Europe, for example, many rooms are smaller than in the United States so this policy is more strictly enforced due to fire code issues.

Always check before you book to make sure that your whole party can stay comfortably without any trouble.

Expensive Mistake #6: Not checking for foreign transaction fees

One mistake that I have made in the past is not checking whether my credit card had foreign transaction fees if booking a hotel outside of the United States.

When I was traveling to Europe, I used my American Express card (thinking that it would get me some extra points), only to be surprised by a foreign transaction fee that I had to pay on the back end of my statement!

Don’t make this mistake – always check before you buy.

Nowadays I use my Chase Reserve Credit Card to avoid this issue – and make sure that you do the same!

Now that, my friend, are the most common mistakes when booking hotels.  Get out there, start hacking and show your kids the world!
